Just in:- Hundreds of people all over Zimbabwe saw bright flashes of light
followed by a loud roar at around 22:20 hours last night (21/05/98). Speculations
about the what caused the flashes and loud noise are uncertain, until further
reports come in. I would say from the reports we have that it was a meteor.
A photographer said that hundreds of dollars worth of batteries he uses
for his equipment went dead! The roar and rumble sound was so loud that
it even shook many houses here.

Rensselaer engineers are working with US Air Force and US Army scientists
to make laser propulsion a reality. Flight tests of a scale model lightcraft
are being conducted at White Sands Missile Range, using PLVTS, a high energy
CO2 laser. Recent flight tests have reached an altitude of 51 feet. The
ultimate height of these tests was restricted to approximately 50 feet
due to range safety considerations.

The
optical rear surface of the lightcraft is used to focus the laser beam
into the engine. The concept is illustrated bellow. The focused laser beam
is absorbed by the air inside the engine, creating a laser supported detonation.
The high pressure, high temperature plasma created by the laser absorption
cools and expands out the rear of the vehicle, producing the thrust which
propels the lightcraft into the sky. (Go

Here is a picture of a leonid meteor photographed during the peak of the
leonid shower last month. 1000 meteors where recorded during the peak of
the shower, which was best observed in eastern Asia. Such large numbers
are only observed once every 33 years. the last time the leonids had such
a shower was in 1966, were as many as 10 000 per hour were seen during
a single hour at it's peak! We are hoping that 1999 will put on an even
better show, which will be best observed in north Africa and Europe.
